deviated septum surgery
Deviated septum surgery also known as septoplasty, is a surgical procedure which is done to fix and correct deviated nasal septum. The main goal of this surgery is to correct alignment of the septum to improve airflow through your nose.
Deviated septum occurs when the cartilage that separates the nostrils, is out of its position, and can cause breathing problems, nosebleeds or even pain.
Condition present at birth, or any damages and injuries to the nose, can lead to deviated septum. The normal aging process may affect nasal structures, worsening a deviated septum over time. Also, changes in the amount of swelling of nasal tissues, because of developing rhinitis or rhinosinusitis, can accentuate the narrowing of a nasal passage from a deviated septum, resulting in nasal obstruction.
Symptoms of deviated septum are as follows:
– Ala obstruction, in one or both sides, which can lead to breathing problem.
– Sleep problems
– Recurrent sinus infection
– Nosebleeds
– Feeling pain in nose and face
– Noisy breathing during sleep
Diagnosis of deviated septum is possible in 2 ways:
– Nose endoscopic
– CT scan
Surgeons first, examine your nose and then consider inside part of the nose, by these 2 ways.
Deviated septum surgery procedure
During deviated septum surgery, surgeons create an incision on one side of the nose to access the septum. They next lift up the mucous membrane, which is the protective covering of the septum. Then deviated septum is moved into the right position.
To perform this surgery, nose should be grown enough. 17 for girls and 18 for boys, is suitable age for performing surgery.
